author of The Pilgrim's Progress was born in the
village of Elstow and imprisoned for his religious
views in the county town of Bedford, and both places
have many reminders of him. Wildlife, native and
exotic, has a favoured place in Bedfordshire, At
Whipsnade Park Zoo more than 2000 animals roam free,
and there is a Wild Animal Kingdom at Woburn Abbey,
showplace home of the Dukes of Bedford. The Royal
Society for the Protection of Birds is based at
Sandy' where visitors ran tour a nature reserve, and
there is a garden of rare birds at Stagsden. Other
homegrown attractions include a lace museum at Luton
and a treasure house at Luton
